Imagine skipping the traffic on I-70 and stepping off a train right at the base of your favorite Colorado ski resort. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, that dream is about to become a reality.
Governor Jared Polis just announced that starting November 1, 2026, a daily, year-round passenger train will run from Denver’s Union Station to Winter Park, Fraser, and Granby — making Grand County one of the most connected mountain destinations in the state.
🏔️ The Only Ski Resort in North America You Can Train Into
Winter Park has long held a unique claim to fame: it’s the only ski resort in North America with direct rail access. The Winter Park Express, which runs weekends and holidays during the winter, has been a beloved option for skiers and riders looking to avoid mountain traffic.
But this expansion takes it to the next level.
Thanks to a new agreement between Union Pacific and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the route will expand into a 365-day-a-year service that not only supports winter tourism, but also opens the door for year-round access, commuter convenience, and sustainable mountain travel.
🛤️ What the Route Includes
The expanded Colorado Mountain Rail line will include stops in:
-
Denver Union Station
-
Winter Park
-
Fraser
-
Granby
With future phases potentially connecting to Hot Sulphur Springs, Kremmling, Steamboat Springs, and Craig.
According to CDOT, Phase 1 of the project is focused on the Denver–Granby corridor, which already has infrastructure in place — making it a fast-track priority.
💡 What This Means for Buyers, Sellers & Investors
This isn’t just a cool convenience — it’s a game changer for real estate.
📈 For Buyers:
-
Easier access means more options for second-home ownership without relying on a car.
-
Ideal for out-of-state homeowners (hello, Texas & Florida buyers!).
-
Improves rental potential for Airbnb and STR investors looking to attract guests year-round.
🏡 For Sellers:
-
Increased buyer demand is likely to drive home values in Winter Park, Fraser, and Granby.
-
Homes near train stops may see a boost in desirability — think walkability, ski access, and low-hassle travel.
-
Now may be the perfect time to list and capture interest ahead of the rail launch.
🔄 Why It Matters for the Community
Beyond real estate, this project promotes:
-
Sustainable travel: Fewer cars on the road means lower emissions and reduced I-70 congestion.
-
Economic development: Supports tourism, hospitality, and small business growth.
-
Commuter flexibility: Offers locals a new way to connect with Denver for work, healthcare, or events.
